Great Facebook debate

I had a great Facebook debate with mates Richard Gozdecki and Max O’Connor yesterday about who would win in a battle between Wolverine and Conan. It was 2-1 (Max and myself) in favor of Wolverine.

This got me thinking (not that I do much of that these days) from a Strength & Conditioning point of view, which character would make the superior athlete?

Again, strength and size may favor Conan but speed, power, mental focus and all round functionality would have to go to the indestructible Wolverine.

Not my most academic piece of thinking but it certainly made Facebook more interesting than the usual Big Brother debates.

Amazing Transformations

Biggest Loser

Michael from last years Biggest Loser USA

I know a lot of Strength Coaches in the industry are not fans of the reality TV shows like The Biggest Loser, etc. but sometimes you have to marvel at the transformations some of the contestants go through physically and mentally.

Admittedly, some of them regain their weight but the majority change their lives.

I know from working with clients who are morbidly obese that being fat can make you lethargic, depressed and simply unhappy.

Don’t procrastinate and never blame others. Take responsibility and make that change today, not tomorrow!

Lunchtime Magic.

Here I will share with you my ‘go to’ lunch choice when I am getting ready for a competition (I will also eat this off season too and sometimes add an extra spud).

Ingredients

1 Medium/Large Sweet Potato

1 Small tin of Tuna with spring water (1/2 for women)

3 Tablespoons of Longley Farm Low Fat Cottage Cheese (2 for women)

Salad

1 Tablespoon Udo’s Choice Oil

1 Teaspoon Nando’s Peri Peir Sauce

1 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar

Preparing this couldn’t be simpler.

  • Cook potato in microwave for 4 minutes.
  • Mix tuna, cottage cheese, Udo’s Oil and Peri Peri sauce in a bowl.
  • Wash and prepare salad.
  • Slice potato and add tuna mix. Add Salad to plate and drizzle with Balsamic.

Unilateral Leg Training by Mike Boyle

I was recently asked what I thought of unilateral vs bilateral training for sports.  I personally like to include both methods in my own training as well as for my athletes.

Here is a great article from Mike Boyle on the subject

Age is Just a Number!

Expendables 2

Sly Stallone at 65

Have you ever heard anyone use their age as an excuse to not be in shape.

As you can see, Sly Stallone has never used age as an excuse to not be in shape and neither have I. Aged 40 I aim to be in the best shape of my life this year. I will keep you posted on the progress in the New Year.

Workout not night out!

I am just preparing my bag for the last workout before Christmas. I see the preparation as a vital part of training. When I see some lads come into the gym dressed in work clobber or even looking like they are off on a night out it makes me chuckle. What are they thinking? What I wear, what I eat and drink before, during and after is all specific to that workout. If I am squatting, I wear my weightlifting shoes. If I am deadlifting, flat trainers or even my windsurfing pumps. Running (heaven forbid), running trainers.

Come on guys, take this seriously and look like you mean business.
